Thrilled to announce the upcoming premiere of Jones rider Nick Russell’s new film FREE! Armed with old Arriflex 16mm and Nizo Super 8mm cameras, Nick and his partner’s Corey and Wyatt Stasinos spent the last four years shooting film and documenting their migrations from Northern Hemi to Southern Hemi chasing snow, riding lines and collecting memories. FREE is the DIY freeride documentary of their travels.

FREE features Nick Russell, Corey + Wyatt Stasinos, Forrest Shearer, Jeremy Jones and friends riding in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Argentina, Chile and Japan. We caught up with Nick to share some thoughts on the film before the premiere:

How was it shooting backcountry splitboarding on film?

It was a love/hate relationship for sure. We’d carry this ridiculously heavy gear into the field using our splitboards, divvied up between the three of us. Wyatt would take the 16 and lenses, I’d take the super 8 and massive battery pack and Cory would carry the tripod and all his photo gear. Camera malfunction due to the old equipment and cold temps were frequent, not to mention user error. Shots were blown. Film processing was expensive and took a long time. However the feeling of getting back a season’s worth of footage is priceless. They are timeless memories captured in a format that cannot be duplicated through post production. That was all the motivation we needed to keep shooting.

The FREE crew did not spend four years getting skunked. Whole lotta dreamy pow in this film... L- Nick in Chile, R- Wyatt in Alaska.

After four years it’s gotta be special to finish this project, why so?

We had planned to finish the film in 2015, then I almost died from a freak illness that January. The entire time in the hospital, all I wanted to do was finish FREE. I wanted something to look back on, to remind me of how simple it can be to go ride powder with your brothers. Making it down to Chile last year to finish her off was the perfect conclusion to an epic journey.

FREE focuses on foot powered freeriding.

Any spoilers to share? What segments should we look out for?

I feel the film blends together as a whole, but my personal favorites are Japan and Chile. Keep an eye out for Julio the couloir shredding dog.

When does the full length film premiere?

We’re throwing a double premiere party this month in Tahoe City, Calif. - FREE and Warp Waves’ ’Aurora Boardealis’ on Oct 27th at the Art Haus Theater, 7pm and 9 pm.

FREE will debut online with The Snowboarder’s Journal in early-November. Stay tuned for a release date soon. Also check out the print feature in the upcoming issue of The Snowboarder’s Journal.
