2017 Season Highlight:
The biggest highlight of last season was winning the Freeride World Tour again. I won four out of five stops and a 2nd place in Andorra. The winter in Tahoe was also a huge highlight. We finally had a real winter with lines filled in that haven't been rideable in years. An Eastern Sierra camping trip with Jeremy in April was an all time finale to my season.
Favorite Jones boards:
Ultra Mountain Twin 161W: It's stiff and responsive, great all around snowboard, lot's of pop! Flagship 162W. Great for charging steep lines, stomping cliffs in the deep snow. A true free ride powerhouse!
What is one lesson or reminder you learned in the backcountry recently?
I've definitely learned first and foremost to trust your intuition. If you're not sure about snow conditions, line choice or your ability…listen to your gut. Being safe in the backcountry is the most important thing.
How do you stay calm + confident when riding exposed lines?
I stay calm and confident by, picking lines within my comfort zone. Also, by talking with friends and putting the time in and studying the terrain.( i.e. finding features that flow, good landings, terrain traps, safe zones, and visualization is important)
How has splitboarding changed your view of the backcountry?
Splitboarding has changed my view of the backcountry in a lot of different ways! It helps me slow down and take in my surroundings. It's a great way to spend your time in the mountains. You don't have buy a lift ticket, deal with crowds, fill up a snowmobile with gas, or pay thousands for a heli ride, in order to ride equally fulfilling terrain. Also, it keeps you strong and helps you appreciate, with every step.. how much the mountains have to offer.
What inspires you to keep snowboarding?
The pure joy I get from doing it. Being in the mountains, is a form of therapy for me, where I can forget about everything else and actually breathe.
What's on your radar for the 2018 season?
I plan on competing on the Freeride World Tour, for my sixth season. Also, filming as much as I can.
