Kayak accessed base camp in Alaska’s Kenai Fjords National Park set up by 2018 Jones Backcountry Adventure Grant winner Corey Nolan.

Adventure and wilderness exploration define the heart of Jones Snowboards.

Since 2015, we have offered an annual grant award to our family of Jones Ambassadors to help support an ambitious backcountry snowboarding expedition in a domestic mountain range. Now going on it’s fifth year, this Jones Ambassador Adventure Grant has helped fund multiple first descents where the rider drove to the trailhead from their home.

In 2018 we started a similar grant program for the general public. Created in association with the American Alpine Club, the Jones Backcountry Adventure Grant and the Jones Live Like Liz Award offer amateur riders the opportunity to seek funding for a dream expedition in their backyard or neighboring ranges.

Starting today until Dec 1st, 2018, we are accepting grant applications for both of our 2019 public grants. Our goal for these grants is to encourage human-powered exploration of the winter wilderness by motivated amateur backcountry snowboarders.

The 2018 Jones Backcountry Adventure Grant was awarded to Corey Nolan to help fund a kayak based exploration of Alaska’s Kenai Fjords National Park. Corey and a crew set up a base camp on the sea shore and rode unexplored lines on the glaciers that towered above them.

The Jones Backcountry Adventure Grant and the Jones Live Like Liz Award both look to support multi-day splitboarding expeditions with a strong adventure component. The winning proposals will be chosen based on their exploratory nature, carbon footprint, creativity and overall significance. Objectives may be a single line/peak or a tour/traverse of a wider region. Both awards offer $1500 plus a Jones splitboard, skins and backpack to the grant recipient.

The Jones Live Like Liz Award honors aspiring snowboard mountain guide Liz Daley who was killed in an avalanche accident in 2014. Both grants have the same selection criteria and offer the same award, but the Live Like Liz award is open to only female applicants and looks to support a female snowboarder with the same amazing passion for splitboarding that Liz was known for.

These grants would not be possible without the support of the American Alpine Club (AAC). The AAC offers it’s members outstanding benefits including the potential of winning more then $150,000 in annual climbing and mountaineering expedition grants. Our partnership with the AAC requires that all grant applicants are AAC members, US citizens and at least 18 years old. While joining the AAC does require a minimal membership fee, we collect no grant application fee. Applicants must be US citizens for liability reasons, but expedition team members may be of any nationality.

To minimize expedition impact, all proposed project locations must be in North America and proposals with minimal travel logistics will be preferred. Projects must also be completed in 2019.

The 2018 Live Like Liz Award was awarded to Jaime Vincent to help fund a bicycle based splitboard trip to Glacier National Park. Jaime and a crew pedaled into the park before the road was open to cars and laid down splitboard tracks alongside the park’s resident grizzly bears.

These grants are open to only non-sponsored riders who receive no financial support from corporate sponsors. Proposals from “amateur” riders that receive only in-kind support will be considered, but support level should be disclosed. The applicant and their partners’ overall splitboarding experience level must match the technicality of the proposed objective. Applicant’s proven photo/video/writing experience, plus social media experience, will also be considered. We will share the story from the winning expeditions on all Jones media channels.

Jaime and her crew set up camp at a ranger’s hut and toured higher into Glacier National Park right from the hut door.

Applying for the grants is easy. Visit the grant information page on the AAC website to read all the grant application criteria and apply. You can download the application to work on your responses, then submit your polished proposal using the online application form. The application window closes on December 1st, 2018. Jeremy Jones and the Jones Brand Managers will choose the two winning proposals and announce the award winners by January 1st, 2019.

We are honored to support motivated and talented backcountry snowboarders. Plan an expedition and apply now for the chance at making your dream expedition come to life!
