About Garrett

Where is your favorite place to snowboard and why?

One of my favorite places to ride is Mt Bachelor because there are endless possibilities for natural jumps and side hits. But beyond that I generally just love snowboarding in the Pacific northwest and dealing with the elements that are present here, some days it’s rain and other days are the best runs of your life. Growing up here has given me an appreciation for the all the days that we get to spend in the mountains and made me realize there’s always something out there for those who seek it!

What has snowboarding or the mountains taught you?

The mountains offer so many insights for those willing to take the time to listen. Of course there is the educational side of what we do; the learning about avalanches and weather patterns, the nights filled of starting at topographic maps, but I think the real lessons that the mountain teach are much more philosophical. The mountains help put things in perspective, they teach you; often in the most interesting of times, what is truly important.

What are you passionate about besides snowboarding?

I am passionate about life! Making the best of the situations we have and taking part in the experiences that come our way. In the summer time some of my favorite activities are fly fishing, back packing and surfing but I am always looking for new experiences.

Tell us about one incredible or influential snowboarding achievement or moment.

Before the pandemic when we were traveling to snowboard events I would run into friends I had met from around the world through snowboarding. People whom I was genuinely excited to share and swap stories about our mutual love for snow with, these friendships are easily what I  cherish most from my snowboarding career.

Another experience I hold close to my heart was riding my first spines in Haines, Alaska; something that was a goal of mine since watching Jeremy Jones in some of the earlier Absinthe films. I had spent about three weeks in Alaska filming with Justin Hostynek and some of the other riders in the crew, this being my first trip to Haines I was still getting my bearings and learning how to navigate the steepest runs I had ever seen. We had a golden day pop up in the forecast and had to split crews in order to get everyone out; meaning I now had to take the role of calling the shots on slope. Luckily I had been watching the guys for the past three weeks and knew what to do, switching roles and being in charge of some of the pre riding task, like flatting the ridge and digging an entrance helped actually calm my nerves. The run was absolutely unforgettable, especially after putting so much work into seeing it come to life!  The place officially got named Spinese Dragons.

Garrett's favorite gear

Mind Expander Twin

"The Mind Expander twin is my go to snowboard, the board turns and feels amazing and it remains totally freestyle competent. Being a rider that loves turning equally as much as getting in the air I often found freestyle boards just didn’t ride all mountain very well. With the Mind Expander Twin my prayers were answered! No matter the conditions I know the I have the board best suited for them with the Mind Expander Twin!"

Mountain Twin

"When I know the conditions are going be be less demanding I go for my Mountain Twin. The Mountain Twin is the best board for resort riding; groomers, park, jibs, pipe, pow, the board handles great on everything. But my favorite part of the Mountain Twin is the playful camber and flex, it makes the mountain really fun even on the bleakest of days."
