SkateTech

The NOW Skate Tech system works like a skateboard truck and enhances board control + reduces foot fatigue by transferring energy input directly from the binding to the board edges through a dynamic design.

Skatetech Exploded Image

1. Hanger 2.0 & 3.0

Hanger pivots on the kingpin like a lever, allowing lightning fast edge-to-edge energy transfer. True baseless design that delivers the most even board flex of any binding on the market.

2. Kingpin

The kingpin is the fulcrum that the hanger pivots on. Design magnifies energy transfer and enhances board response through leverage,

3. Post

The post attaches the hanger to the kingpin and is the connection between binding and board.

4. Bushings

Bushings are the primary binding contact point and offer customizable response and dampening (Surf mode vs Freeride mode).

Riding Flat Image

Riding flat

Skate Tech bindings feature a built-in dampening system for ultimate control bombing flat on your base. The baseplate rests on rubber bushings that absorb vibrations as you ride over rough snow. The binding also follows your every foot movement without altering the flex of the board and offers unmatched board feel for making micro edge adjustments as you ride flat.

Skate tech turn Image

Unmatched turn power

Power is transmitted directly to the edge. When you make a hard heel or toe turn the force you place on your straps and highback is transferred directly to your edge through the hanger, kingpin and post. By using the mechanical advantage of this pivot and lever system, Skate Tech bindings are the most responsive bindings in the world. Once on edge, you are locked in.

Traditional Bindings Image

No comparison to traditional bindings

Power is transmitted through the center disk. When you make a hard heel or toe turn on traditional bindings the pressure you place on your straps goes into the fixed center disk and forces the binding baseplate to bend before power is delivered to the edges. Energy is concentrated at the center of the board with traditional rigid baseplates which decreases potential turn power compared to Skate Tech bindings

Freeride mode vs Surf mode

Freeride mode

Freeride mode

Position the wide half of the strap above the buckle for more lateral support and board response. Use Hard Bushings for maximum board response.

Surf mode

Surf mode

Position the wide half of the strap below the buckle for solid heel support but more ankle flexibility for getting loose. Use Soft Bushings for a looser, more dynamic feel.

I got these bindings at the end of last season, I rode on them 3 times before the toe strap fell off when I was getting off the lift. It had broke in the place where the strap has an extra bend for easy out and in. Very disappointing. I’m using old binding straps from Burton freestyle in fear that the bend in the straps would brake while riding.

Hi Rshirey,

I am incredibly sorry to hear about the toe strap failure on your Orion bindings. We want you to have full confidence in your gear without needing to put old parts onto it—please reach out to our warranty team so we can get you the correct replacement straps and get you back on the snow safely.

I bought these at the end of last year, at first

I bought these at the end of last year, at first I was very excited to experience the new technology with the toe and ankle straps. Unfortunately on my 3 time riding these bindings my toe strap broke off on the part that bends to help get in and out of the binding very disappointing so I put on my 12 year old straps from my Burton freestyle, in fear of the straps breaking off this season while riding so jones I’m sorry but that kink in the binding strap is not it.

Poor quality -Jones is rejecting the lifetime warranty

In case anybody wants to purchase the product You can find a thread on reddit that shows what happened with my bindings after 3rd day of riding.
They snapped for no reason and Jones is saying this is my fault.

Ridiculous….

Hi Piotr,

We are very sorry to hear about the experience you had with your Orion bindings and the subsequent warranty claim. We take durability concerns seriously and want to ensure every case is reviewed fairly. I will look into your specific claim to see if there is anything more we can do to assist.

Not really progressive highback, more like just two zoned one

I had the chance to mount them on to my Jones Stratos, but havent gotten the chance to ride them yet. The highback is not really 'progressive', from what it seems its just two zoned, stiff at the bottom and soft at the top, and yeah, its quite flexible at the top. The ratchets are REALLY solid, especially for someone coming off rentals. I got size L and have Burton Ruler BOA boots sized EU 43,5/US 10. 5 and they fit, but I would say its a bit iffy. Like size 44 and up would fit perfectly no doubt though.

Best all round bindings!

I used Orion bindings on my Jones Flagship and Capita Mega Merc and these are the best all round bindings I've ever had! They are stiff and responsive enough for hard charging and tight tree runs, and flexible enough to do jumps and tricks while at them. Highly recommended!

My favorite bindings

Stiff enough to charge on an Aviator but still playful enough to feel fun and lively. These are ideal "goldilocks" bindings and have taken over as my go-to setup!

Very responsive. The adjustable backs design are very nice and all for a lot customization. You can also make a lot of adjustments to the bindings like how the ankle strap sits in your boot and how the toe strap grabs.

The ticket item

Super comfy straps and baseplate and also easy to adjust if needed. I wear the Ride Insano boot and they’re pretty low profile and fit super well with this binding. Stoked on em for sure.

Lets get the negative out

Lets get the negative out of the way first. That is Size. I am in a Burton Ion in 9.0. The straps are marked M/L and are shortened most of the way. The Foot Pillow, as they call it just sticks out a bit passed the sidewall when the binding is centered. The size chart says 7.5-10. Unless your boot is very high volume, I am find it pretty unlikely an 8.0 will work in this binding.

That out of the way, this is the best binding I have used in a 22 year snowboarding career that includes being an instructor, ski/board shop manager, and big mountain competitor. I'm 165 lbs.

The description is pretty right on. a freeride binding that is still soft enough for a playful and surfy style. In really serious chop and chunder there is a little more of the ankle wobble than the stiffer bindings (I also have a Mercury), but the gains in suspension with the Progressive Highback make up for it. The strap is a tiny bit softer than Mercury, but I do find it more comfortable.

Overall the feel of the binding is very natural. For those of you who haven't experienced Skate Tech initially doesn't feel as crisp edge to edge because it rolls (much like trucks on a skateboard). Once you are used to it, it honestly feels quicker because instead of jerking from one edge to another every part of the roll comes alive. It also increases the suspension of the binding while increasing the precision. You will see a lot of short term reviews out there saying it is slower, but once you have spent enough time on them to learn the feel, and then go back to another binding, you realize how much you miss by not being on a Skate Tech binding. I have had several weeks on Orion, but have had a Mercury for all season and have ridden NOW bindings for many years, so this is a very long term review of Skate Tech.

As for design in general, There are some negative reviews about setup difficulty, but if you read the manual (GASP! Not the manual! Heresy!) is is actually pretty simple. I do wish they still offered offset plates for those of a big or small size boot who needs 1/4"-1/2" stance width adjustment. The strap adjustment is easy on the fly. Ratchets work very well. The highback forward lean adjustment is easy and works without tools and for a duck footed rider like myself, the pre-rotated highbacks make life easier, although it might not suit the alpine stance crowd as much.

As for the Specific model, all in all, The Orion is the most natural and comfortable binding I have ever ridden. Mercury is a little more powerful and stable, but there is a little more strap and highjack bite. The highback of the Orion feels just as powerful on engagement, but flexes very natural through terrain variations. The ankle strap, likewise has a very natural and comfortable flex in action. If you are upwards of 190 lbs. this may be a bit more on the freestyle end of the spectrum, but at 170 lbs. or less Orion is a spot on all-around and freeride binding.

Now please enjoy these gratuitous pow shots of me on the Orion from Monarch Mountain.

After several weeks and one freeride competition under my belt, I would rate these my all-time favorite binding. If you charge hard and value style and fluidity, this is definitely your top contender.

Great all mountain binding.

Great binding that is much lighter than my previous one I was replacing. it seems to handle well at speed and is more playful than my previous one (which is what I wanted). I wanted a binding for fast days and park days and I seem to have found a good one. looks are pretty good too.

Unmatched

I picked these bindings up from a local shop in MN and I am extremely impressed with their functionality. This was year 20 of riding for me, and I have seen the evolution of Jones' products since I began following Jeremy Jones. I picked up the RP Roberts colorway and they look awesome on my Flagship. I was so happy with the bindings that I decided to pick up the same pair in the White/Black colorway. My boots are size 10.5 and I went with the size Large; they fit my boots perfectly. I was a bit concerned with the base plates being "warped" and uneven out of the box, but they worked fine when I screwed them down (this occurred on the RP Roberts pair and the White/Black pair). The White/Black pair was missing a bushing out of the box, and unfortunately this was my local shop's last pair of Orions. Overall - I would recommend to anyone looking for a Surfy feel that wants to occasionally swap between a Freeride feel. For reference I am using my Flagship in 'Freeride' mode and my Hovercraft and Mind Expander in 'Surf' mode.

Hi Connor, thanks for reaching out and stoked to hear you're enjoying your gear. Feel free to reach out to us directly if you need help getting new bushings or baseplates.

Cheers!

Great bindings. Highly recommended.

These bindings are great. They’re very responsive and I love the feel. The graphics design is awesome. I tried the surf mode but didn’t like it so I switched back to the free ride mode. I prefer max responsiveness so no surprise there. The surf mode is fun but if you’re weaving through trees nonstop it gets a bit tiresome. I wear an 11.5 boot and got the large and it’s the perfect size. I have a set of the mercury bindings too and so far I like those more than the orions but still highly recommend these.
